 Early Literacy: Every Child Ready to Read

Current research on early literacy and brain development indicates that it is never too early to prepare children for success as readers. Parents and caregivers of newborns, toddlers and preschoolers must be informed of their critical role as their children's first teacher. Support from the Imagine Campaign allows us to meet our goal of getting books and information into the hands of the parents / caregivers in St. Charles County. We do this by distributing our Early Literacy Kits to families with pre-readers through partnerships with organizations such as Crisis Nursery, WIC, United Services, the YMCA Early Childhood Center and more.  Soon we will be getting these kits into the hand of every mother who delivers at Progress West as well as continue to work with other youth serving agencies. Service to the Homebound: Books to You

For those individuals that aren’t able to make it to the library, we are able to bring the library to them through our Books to You Program.  This is a completely volunteer-driven program that provides homebound individuals, as well as 42 nursing homes, senior centers and assisted living centers, with a variety of books, DVDs and Playaway audio books. The center collections are rotated every six weeks to provide a mini-library collection for seniors to enjoy.  

Volunteers are paired up with homebound individuals to bring them different selections from the library on a regular basis.  Betty, one of the program’s recipients, has macular degeneration and her failing eyesight prevents her from driving.  Every month a volunteer picks out books on CD from the Deer Run Library and brings them to her.  As Betty says, “Oh, it is just wonderful; you get books plus a visit and a chat!”
